The BlackBerry KEY2 was introduced in early June 2018, just
over a year after its predecessor. It is the fifth smartphone developed by
the Chinese manufacturer TCL on behalf of the Canadian group BlackBerry after
DTEK50 and DTEK60, KEYOne and Motion. This is the successor to
KEYOne. It takes the ergonomics, while making some changes to the
Sensitive full keyboard Keyboard
enthusiasts KEYOne and Passport will be delighted to find in the KEY2 this equipment become unique, in the great tradition of terminals of the Canadian brand (which was already in 2017 the last to support this type of equipment) .
The BlackBerry KEY2 thus looks a lot like KEYOne, even if the upper metal border disappears in favor of a mineral glass that now extends to the edge of the mobile. Likewise at the back: the textured polycarbonate diamond shell now covers almost 100% of the dorsal surface. The metal now covers only the slices.
4.5 inch Full HD screen
The resemblance between the two smartphones is not only because of their sensitive keyboards, but also their screens. The two slabs are identical in every respect. The diagonal measures 4.5 inches. The format of the slab is 3/2. The definition of the display is always equivalent to a Full HD: 1080 x 1620 pixels. That is a resolution of 434 pixels per inch. The set is protected by a third generation Gorilla Glass, not a fourth.
Behind the screen is always a mid-range platform, which has been updated. The Snapdragon 625 has been replaced by the Snapdragon 660, an octo-core clocked up to 2.2 GHz with an Adreno 512 GPU. It comes with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage (expandable by microSDXC up to 256GB extra), twice as much as KEYOne in both cases.
Battery 3500 mAh
The battery of the BlackBerry KEY2 is the same as that of KEYOne, with a capacity of 3500 mAh. It is not removable and is compatible with Quick Charge 3.0. The connectivity of the smartphone changes very little. It includes WiFi ac dual band, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, USB 3.0 type-C, FM radio, NFC and LTE category 11.
A 3.5mm jack is present to connect a wired headset and two speakers are integrated into the chassis. The keyboard under the screen is sensitive (it works like a touchpad). A fingerprint reader is hidden in the space bar, as for KEYOne.
Double 12 + 12 MP photo sensor
Side photo, the BlackBerry KEY2 benefits from a hardware update. KEYOne's 12-megapixel main sensor becomes a dual 12 + 12 megapixel sensor with opening lenses at f / 1.8 and f / 2.6. The autofocus is always in phase detection (Dual Pixel) and a dual-tone flash always provides a support of brightness. The KEY2 is capable of filming, like the KEYOne, in 2160p at 30 frames per second. At the front, the webcam is, once again, an 8-megapixel model, but its fixed-focus lens now opens at f / 2.0.
All of these elements are powered by Android 8.1 Oreo without overlay, but with all the BlackBerry tools that fans like, including BBM preinstalled. The BlackBerry KEY2 measures 8.5 mm thick (1 mm less) and weighs 168 grams (12 grams less). It is available in two colors: black or silver.
